Nigeria: Nine Pilgrims Die in Saudi Arabia

IOL pic oct 8 court justice scales

Makkah — Head of the National Hajj Commission in Medina, Dr Bello Tambuwal, yesterday said that the number of Nigerian pilgrims who have died in the holy land has increased to nine.

Tambuwal, in a telephone chat with our correspondent said the pilgrims were from Kebbi, Kano, Katsina and Bauchi states. He said apart from the Bauchi pilgrim who died after falling from a high rise building, the others died from illnesses.

He added that to ensure that medical services are available to the pilgrims, the Nigerian mission is operating two clinics in Medina, and that they render 24 hour service. He said the commission is working with the medical teams of state pilgrims' boards to ensure that priority attention is given to the health needs of pilgrims.

In another development, the director of traffic in the holy city, Brig. Mishaal Al-Maghrabi, announced earlier that old minibuses will be prevented from transporting pilgrims due to the vehicles' unreliability. He then set up a tripartite committee to monitor the minibuses and prevent them from roaming the streets of Makkah.

our correspondent observed that a number of minibus drivers have refused to withdraw their vehicles from the streets despite the announcement. To protest the decision, the drivers blocked the Hajj street for more than three hours, and it took security agents to bring the situation under control.

Suspect Accuses Policeman of Joining in the Lynch of Aluu Four

More revelations are emerging on how four University of Port Harcourt undergraduates were killed as a suspect in custody, David Ugbaje, Tuesday accused a policeman of participating in the lynching of the deceased.

He said the policeman joined the mob in the killing of the four students at Omuokiri, Aluu, in Rivers State on October 5.

Also yesterday, the police announced that they had arrested the fleeing principal suspect in the murder, Lucky, alias Bright, who raised the false alarm that labelled the students as armed robbers, which prompted the rage of the mob.

Lucky was said to owe one of the victims some money and they had gone on a debt-recovery mission, when he accused the deceased of trying to rob him.

Ugbaje told journalists Tuesday in Port Harcourt, when the police paraded him and 12 other suspects for their alleged involvement in the crime, that one of the policemen who met them when the mob was beating the students joined them in beating the victims.

He explained that it was after the policeman had partaken in the beating that he requested that the students be handed over to them, a request which the mob refused.

As Ugbaje narrated, "along the line, two policemen came around. One of the policemen was pleading that the boys be left alone, but the other one even joined us in beating the boys. After beating the boys, the policemen now said let the boys be handed over to them. The crowd said no: We no go gree. The policemen now told us that whatever this will result to, they (the crowd) will bear the consequences."

Ugbaje's narrative tallied with the eyewitness account of Miss Ibisobia Elkanah, an elder sister of one of the victims, Tekenah Friday Elkanah. Ibisobia said the police were not repelled by the mob as claimed by them (police), but that one of the policemen suggested that the victims be burnt alive.

"The police van came, went into the mob and they were talking to them (youths). The people kept quiet as the police were making statements. I heard them laughing. You know, they were happy. They kept quiet again. The police talked and they laughed again. The next was for me to see three policemen coming out of the mob, boarded their van. And, one of the said 'burn them alive'. I must confess, I was gripped with fear," she said.

But the police's storyline has been that they were chased back by the murderous mob, forcing them to call for reinforcement from the Joint Task Force (JTF). However, men of the JTF did not come until several hours after the students had been killed and burnt.

The police had earlier announced the arrest of 21 suspects in connection with the crime, including the traditional ruler of the community.

Those paraded included the traditional ruler of Omokiri village, Alhaji Hassan Welewa, Lawal Segun, Lucky Orji, Cynthia Chinwo, Ekpe Daniel, George Nwadei, Gabriel Oche and Ozioma Abajuo.

Others were Chigozie Evans Samuel, Endurance Edet, Uwem Sampson Akpabio, David Chinasa Ugbaje and Ikechukwu Louis Amadi (alias Kapoon).

However, while the police allowed journalists to interview Ugbaje, Amadi and Segun, other suspects, especially Welewa, were shielded from the press.

Briefing journalists, the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Indabawa, said the police arrested two additional suspects, Amadi and Ugbaje, at about 3pm on Monday.

He said the police were forced to parade the suspects because of the enormity of the crime and the interest the crime had generated.

"It is not the philosophy of the Inspector General of Police to parade suspects. Nonetheless, the gruesome manner in which the crime was committed, coupled with the direct and glaring involvement of some of these suspects and the interest generated by the heinous crime left the police with no option than to parade them," he said.

The Inspector General of Police (IG), Mohammed Abubakar, had ordered a full investigation into the crime.

Nigeria: Currency Trafficker Opens Up - I Collected U.S.$2.8 Million From One Trader - Suspect

The identities of individuals allegedly sponsoring a suspected currency trafficker, Abubakar Tijjani Sheriff, who was arrested while attempting to smuggle $7million cash (about N1.1billion) out of the country, are now beginning to emerge. LEADERSHIP can now authoritatively report that one of the sponsors (names withheld) gave $2.8million cash out of the said $7million to Sheriff for trafficking to Dubai.

A source within the EFCC told LEADERSHIP yesterday that the suspect had made a useful statement that would enable the commission unravel the other individuals that were using Sheriff as front for illegal currency trafficking.

The source further confided in our correspondent that the details of the said sponsor's status would not be made public for now, as he insisted that the development might affect the course of further investigation on the matter.

He added that the suspect was cooperating with the anti-graft agency in its bid to apprehend other sponsors.

He said, "I can tell you that the suspect (Sheriff) has revealed that $2.8million out of the $7million cash belongs to the said sponsor. He has confessed that he is a courier for 20 individuals who hired him to courier the money for them to Dubai. He is still assisting investigators to determine these individuals.

"I will not be able to give you further details on the status of the said suspect and other sponsors. This is because we are closing in on them and we don't want to do anything that will enable them to escape. The EFCC operatives are working on the suspect's confession and I can tell you that appreciable progress is being made in this regard."

The 24-year-old suspect was picked up on Thursday, last week, at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos en route Dubai, United Arab Emirates, at the point of boarding the plane.

Meanwhile, four suspects have been arrested and are currently being quizzed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over an attempt to export $9million cash out of the country.

LEADERSHIP exclusively gathered that the suspects were arrested separately at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano.

Checks revealed that, two days after the arrest of Sheriff, the anti-graft agency similarly apprehended one Nkem Sebastian for attempting to smuggle $286,000 out of the country. He was arrested as he prepared to board a plane to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, en route China.

When the money was discovered, Sebastian disclosed that he had only $200,000 on him. But a search revealed that he was actually carrying $286,000.

Under-declaring cash at the entry and exit points in the country are a criminal offence and the person making the declaration risks losing 25 per cent of the money under the provisions of the Money Laundering Act, 2012.

On interrogation, Sebastian claimed that he was given the money by one Konja for distribution to unnamed recipients in China. He claimed not to know the home of Konja, saying that they always met at the airport where he handed him the consignment to deliver outside Nigeria.

The commission had, on September 22, arrested one Prince Oteh Emenike with N996, 040 cash at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Unlike the others, Emenike, who was to board a China-bound Ethiopian Airline, fully disclosed the money. He claimed the money was given to him to deliver to some traders in China.

But the latest in the string of arrests over bulk cash smuggling, LEADERSHIP can now report, was at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, where operatives of the EFCC this Sunday arrested one Alhaji Tasiu Ilu Kura, a businessman, with $700,000 (about N112million). The suspect, who hails from Kura local government area in Kano State, was arrested en route Dubai with a valid Niger Republic passport (07PC61816).

Three other suspects were equally arrested for failing to declare the foreign exchange on them. They are Sadi Umar Abdurahman, Nasir Sanni Ali and Haruna Inuousa Murtala.

According to the EFCC source, an investigation into the source of the funds and what it was meant for was ongoing.

Nigeria: Police Breaks Up Church Protest

The prompt intervention of the police prevented what could have turned into bloody confrontation at the ECWA Gospel Church Karu, Abuja Sunday morning.

The members of the church were protesting the planned removal of the parish pastor over sexual misconduct by a delegation from the church's District Council Church, DCC.

Trouble started when a faction of the church interrupted the Sunday service demanding that the delegation from the DCC shelve its planned announcement removing the pastor, Rev DA Gyet over allegation of sexual impropriety with his female househelp.

The aggrieved group protested that he was not given fair hearing before his punishment was meted out.

The service ended in chaos when members of the visiting panel were forcibly ejected from the church premises.

The police and some elders subsequently had a hectic time calming frayed nerves and curbing pockets of violence on the church premises.

An aide of the embattled church head told our reporter that the victim in question was a lady of questionable character who had been linked to similar controversies in the past.

"We all know the girl Asabe as a person of loose moral values. We also know she is not a truthful person. She has even confessed that the pastor is innocent of the allegations levelled at him. But they have swept her confession under the carpet.

She is being used by some powerful persons at the district council who want to remove the reverend by all means and place their own candidate at the head of the church.

Presently the girl making the accusation is nowhere to be found but they are still going ahead to remove the pastor even though he has not been allowed to appeal the verdict as allowed by church rules. We will resist this totally," he said.

After the delegation left in disarray, the elders of the church appealed to the police to leave the premises so that they could settle the issue amicably.

But one of the senior police officers on ground insisted the police would remain until peace was restored.

Nigeria: Army Arrests Immigration Officer, Others Over Boko Haram Links

The Nigeria Army has arrested an immigration officer and a number of other officials for allegedly helping the Boko Haram carry out a number of attacks

According to a BBC report, the military captured the immigration officer, who confessed to being an active member of the Islamist militant group.

His confession led to the arrest of a number of other officials.

According to Lt Colonel Sagir Musa, the immigration official was arrested last month while impersonating an army officer.

"He confessed to being an active member of the Boko Haram terrorist sect," said Col Musa.

"He also confessed to having been trained alongside 15 other members of the sect on weapon handling, assassination and special operations in Niger."

Col Musa said his testimony helped the military root out a number of others who had carried out attacks for Boko Haram.

Some months ago President Goodluck Jonathan had complained that the group had sympathisers in high places including government.

Analysts have in the past said that the fight against Boko Haram was undermined because the Islamist group had managed to infiltrate the military.

Boko Haram shot to prominence in 2009 when hundreds of their members attempted to storm police stations and government buildings in Maiduguri.

The security forces quelled the rebellion and killed dozens of the sect's members, as well as its leader.

Since then, their attacks have been better organised and caused many more civilian deaths.

Boko Haram has killed hundreds in northern and central Nigeria since 2009, when it launched a campaign to install an Islamic state.

The group's fighters have bombed government buildings and churches and assassinated Muslim clerics who disagreed with their views.

Their attacks have killed woman and children, Muslims and Christians.

Boko Haram 'Accountant' Arrested With N4.5 Million Cash

The onslaught of the security services against Boko Haram seems to be paying off with the arrest of a top operative of the Islamist group described as the accountant.

'The accountant' was said to be in transit between Kano and Zaria, last week, with N4.5 million cash belonging to the Islamist group when men of the JTF intercepted and arrested him.

Sunday Vanguard sources said he was travelling in a commuter bus as a cover. The arrest came barely two days after security agents tracked and killed Boko Haram spokesman, Abu Qaqa, in an operation in Kano.

Anti-American protest in Kano yesterday

The Islamist group's 'accountant', it was learnt, embarked on the journey which originated from Maiduguri, Borno State, to make cash transfers. The sources said his cover blew after he and another associate made some money transfers in Kano, an action that aroused the curiosity of bank officials who alerted security agents.

The associate was arrested but, by then, the 'accountant' was already on his way to Zaria. Subsequent manhunt yielded fruit as the 'Boko Haram accountant' was arrested in transit. The Islamist group's kingpin, according to the sources, is under intense interrogation by security agents in Kano. Sunday Vanguard understood that the security services believe the arrest of the 'accountant' is a major breakthrough in the efforts to contain terrorism in the country.

Boko Haram is believed to be behind deadly attacks in the northern part of the country.

Bauchi — A suicide bomber today attacked Saint John's Catholic Church Bauchi opposite Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium killing two people and injuring 46.

The attack was the third attack in two weeks.

Nine people were killed by unknown gunmen in Zango village last Sunday, and last Monday ex-Comptroller General of Prisons Ibrahim Jarma was shot dead together along with his orderly after he came out from the mosque near his house in Azare.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Hassan Mohammed Auyo confirmed the death of two persons and the 46 injured.

ASP Hassan said the bomber came in an Opel Vectra. Among the injured persons were two policemen deployed to protect the church.

An eye witness told Daily Trust that the bomber tried to gain entrance to the church but when he failed he detonated his explosives in a car park killing himself and one woman.

According to him, "we came out from training inside the stadium. We had just passed the church when we heard a loud sound followed by fire and smoke. We had to run for our lives."

Witnesses said Police and Army personnel cordoned off the area while rescue agents evacuated the victims to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi.

Nigeria: 24-Hour Curfew On Damaturu

A 24-hour curfew was yesterday imposed on Damaturu, the Yobe State capital even as the Joint Task Force (JTF) said 25 suspected members of the Jama'atu Ahlis Sunnati Lidda'awati Wal Jihad also called Boko Haram, were arrested during a raid.

Sunday Trust reports that the restriction of movement has grounded social and economic activities in Damaturu, the city that has witnessed the worst impact of the Boko Haram insurgency.

A sizeable number of residents including students, civil servants and politicians have deserted the town for fear of the sect.

Lieutenant Lazarus Eli, the spokesman of TF told our correspondent on phone that the exercise was meant to "clean up the state capital of terrorists."

Cont'd on pg 3Eli, who said the exercise began around 5:30am yesterday revealed that a cache of arms had been uncovered from many hideouts of Boko Haram members.

"Soon after the commencement of the operations, some terrorists confronted our men but we succeeded in subduing them. No life was lost on both sides and the good news is that we have arrested 25 suspects.

"We have also seized large quantity of weapons, including RPGs and multi-purpose machine guns.

"The exercise will continue. We have restricted movement of people and vehicles.

"JTF will advise the state government on the right time to relax the curfew," Eli said.

Our correspondent reports that the closure of all the entry points to Damaturu caused gridlock as motorists going to different parts of the country from Borno and neighbouring countries of Chad, Cameroon and Niger were stranded.

Residents in Damaturu have remained indoors.

Meanwhile, the attacks on telecommunication masts by the insurgents have grounded communication and aggravated the woes of the masses.

Nigeria: Insecurity - 2 Battalions Moved to Damaturu, Potiskum

In its continued effort at ridding the country of terrorists' activities, the Nigerian Army has moved two of its battalions to the troubled towns of Damaturu and Potiskum of Yobe state.

This is coming on the heels of a report that a 24-hour dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed on the two towns to enable the military conduct a house-to-house search with the aim of seizing arms that were alleged to have been stockpiled in the two towns.

Leadership Sunday gathered that a new 233 Battalion under the command of Lt. Colonel D. C. Bako has been established to carry out the clean-up exercise in the troubled north-east state of Yobe.

Though leadership Sunday could not ascertain the number of the military personnel that were moved to the troubled areas, a military battalion consists of between 300 and 1, 200 soldiers, according to military sources.

All efforts to get the high military command to confirm the movement and formation of a new battalion was unsuccessful. The army spokesman, Brigedier General Bolaji Koleosho, was said to have been out of the country, while Lt. Colonel A. A. Yusuf that could hold brief for him could not be reached on his mobile telephone numbers.

However, briefing reporters in Damaturu yesterday, spokesman of the Joint Task Force, JTF, Lt. Eli Lazarus, disclosed that 25 suspected members of Boko Haram were arrested by the JTF in an early morning raid in some of the suspected hideout flashpoints of the sect members.

According to Lt. Lazarus, during the operation codenamed 'operation restore sanity 2', which was carried out in Nasarawa, Tashar Tifa, and One Million Rd, the JTF after a fierce battle with the alleged Boko Haram members also recovered 3 grenade launchers.

Other items that were recovered during the raid on the suspected Boko Haram hideouts include 7 laptop computers, 12 assault rifles, Motorola wacky-talky, camera tripod, military and police uniforms, one tricycle popularly called Keke NAPEP, GSM handsets and many sim cards.

Also in the course of the operation, 7 women and 12 children that the sect was allegedly using as shield during its operations were rescued.

Police Arrest 9 suspects In Asaba

The Delta State police command yesterday raided several houses where stolen items are kept by robbers in Agbor axis of the state.

In the raid that followed the discovery by security operatives, nine suspected robbers were arrested.

Similarly, property worth millions of naira suspected to have been stolen from members of the public by the hoodlums were recovered from the hideouts.

When contacted, police public relations officer (PPRO) DSP Charles Muka confirmed the story, adding that nine suspects were arrested during the raid.

He said based on intelligence report that some hoodlums were in possession of stolen items in houses and hideouts in Agbor, detectives from Agbor Division stormed the depots and raided the suspects' hideouts, following which nine of the hoodlums namely Sunday Olije, Onyisi Okwudi, Dennis Osaji, Chukwueku Agbor, Patrick David, Elvis Obera, Kenneth Eboh, Chuks Nwabieze and Esther Sunday, a lady, were arrested.

Muka said that search warrants were properly executed in their houses following which these items were recovered: three Tiger 950 generators, 14 inch Sharp television, two LG DVD players, Samsung DVD player, eight assorted Nokia handsets, and two other types of handsets, two clippers, one stabilizer, two digital cameras, one Phillips pressing iron, assorted sound systems, two hammers, assorted provisions and cash of N7,000.

The PPRO said most of the owners of the stolen items had been identified and that they had claimed ownership of the items, while the suspects were helping the police in their investigations after which they would be charged to court.

Muka used the opportunity to call on members of the public to give the police useful information and be conscious of movements and activities in their domains, adding that the arrest of the suspects was made possible by kind and spirited Deltans who had the interest of peace and security at heart.

With the introduction of arms into the operations of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the state, the state commandant of the corps, Mr. Andekin Amos Musa, has declared total war against vandals and other criminal elements in the state.

The NSCDC boss made the declaration at the passing out parade of officers of the command trained in the use of arms in Asaba.

According to Musa, "I assure you that we will not rest on our oars in discharging our duty at ensuring better security to our nation. I use this opportunity to warn criminals particularly vandals to desist from their criminal acts as it will be a total war."

He said the newly trained officers had been placed on red alert at different locations across the state to arrest criminals, particularly illegal dealers of petroleum products and vandals, adding that the command would deal ruthlessly with criminals.

While charging the officers to be loyal, dedicated and exercise self-control, Musa warned them against the misuse of arms as any breach will attract sanctions.

He also disclosed that more officers will soon be trained in the use of arms to put the command in a better position to confront the vandals anytime, adding that they are now better equipped and ready to fight crime in the state and beyond.

Lagos Robbery Suspects Make Shocking Revelations

Lagos State Police

Operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad have arrested two persons for their alleged connivance in the massive robbery attacks two Sundays ago in Lagos, which left three policemen and some civilians dead, with several others wounded. A one-year-old baby was also hit by bullets during their dare-devil operation which lasted for hours.

Recovered from the gang's hideout somewhere around Agege area of Lagos, was one of the vehicles reportedly used in the operation, two AK 47 riffles and two magazines loaded with two hundred ammunition.

The duo of Rasheed Suleimon and Kaseem Enifolabi, according to Lagos State Police Command spokes person, Ngozi Braide, while parading them along side other suspected members of different robbery gangs that have been on the command's wanted list, were arrested in Dopemu and Oshodi areas of the state by operatives from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja.

She said the suspects confessed knowing members of the gang that operated two weeks ago but insisted they did not take part in the operation, adding: "During investigation one of the suspects took the operatives to the gang's hideout at Wahabi Street in Agege area of the state where one of their operational vehicles, a Honda civic, was recovered with two AK 47 riffles and four magazines with two hundred ammunition."

She explained that the robbers were able to escape that day because the Police were mindful of civilian casualties. Braide said: "The robbers shot sporadically, but with the way we were trained, we are not supposed to shoot anyhow, particularly in the crowd. It will be better to allow robbers to go free than killing innocent people because the Police will always arrest them someday."

One of the suspects, 21-year-old Rasheed Sulaimon, who hails from Kwara State, claimed he knew the leader of the gang, even as he disclosed that a female was among the robbers who terrorized Lagos that fateful day.

Hear him: Yes, I know the leader of the gang that operated in Lagos two weeks ago. They did not tell me they were going to rob. But after the robbery, one of them known as Yemi boss called me the next day and said they struck the previous day and killed some policemen.
"He later sent me N3,000 recharge card warning me not to tell any soul, or he would kill me. There was a woman among the gang. And they usually operated in both military and police uniform. I knew Yemi boss at a drinking joint in Akerele area of Sango from where we became friends."

Arrested kidnap suspects

In another development, the Police in Lagos, last week, smashed another gang which specializes in kidnapping eminent personalities in Lagos. The police arrested three suspected members of the gang who confessed to have kidnapped two staff of Dangote group and an Indian man recently. Three suspected members of the kidnap-gang whose target are the rich and influential were paraded by the police.

The trio of Pius Uba Livinus, 25, Kelerchukwu Onyeman, 27, and Ayebe Segun, 32, told a bewildered crowd that they were responsible for the kidnap of two staff of Dangote Group of Companies on September 2 and 17, 2012 . One of them, Pius Livinus, who said his father was dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force 17 years ago, disclosed that the sum of N32 million was collected as ransom for the release of one of their victims.

Conspiracy and kidnapping

Livinus was discovered to have been arrested and charged to Magistrate Court 17, PWD, Ikeja for conspiracy and kidnapping in April 2012, but was released two months later, before he allegedly perpetrated Yahaya's kidnap.

Livinus told reporters that his gang's operational method includes storming prominent clubs in Ikoyi and other highbrow areas, from where they would kidnap fun seekers while leaving the club.

He confessed to have taken part in three kidnap cases, noting: "The first one was successful. It involved an Indian man, in Victoria Island. Four of us were involved. At the end of the day, N32 million was paid as ransom out of which I got N5 million.

"The second one was not successful because I was arrested and charged to court but managed to find my way out." The 25-year-old Secondary School Certificate holder from Isiala-Ngwa North, Abia state said he used part of his share to buy a plot of land in Lekki.
