Nigeria: Nine Pilgrims Die in Saudi Arabia

IOL pic oct 8 court justice scales

Makkah — Head of the National Hajj Commission in Medina, Dr Bello Tambuwal, yesterday said that the number of Nigerian pilgrims who have died in the holy land has increased to nine.

Tambuwal, in a telephone chat with our correspondent said the pilgrims were from Kebbi, Kano, Katsina and Bauchi states. He said apart from the Bauchi pilgrim who died after falling from a high rise building, the others died from illnesses.

He added that to ensure that medical services are available to the pilgrims, the Nigerian mission is operating two clinics in Medina, and that they render 24 hour service. He said the commission is working with the medical teams of state pilgrims' boards to ensure that priority attention is given to the health needs of pilgrims.

In another development, the director of traffic in the holy city, Brig. Mishaal Al-Maghrabi, announced earlier that old minibuses will be prevented from transporting pilgrims due to the vehicles' unreliability. He then set up a tripartite committee to monitor the minibuses and prevent them from roaming the streets of Makkah.

our correspondent observed that a number of minibus drivers have refused to withdraw their vehicles from the streets despite the announcement. To protest the decision, the drivers blocked the Hajj street for more than three hours, and it took security agents to bring the situation under control.

Suspect Accuses Policeman of Joining in the Lynch of Aluu Four

More revelations are emerging on how four University of Port Harcourt undergraduates were killed as a suspect in custody, David Ugbaje, Tuesday accused a policeman of participating in the lynching of the deceased.

He said the policeman joined the mob in the killing of the four students at Omuokiri, Aluu, in Rivers State on October 5.

Also yesterday, the police announced that they had arrested the fleeing principal suspect in the murder, Lucky, alias Bright, who raised the false alarm that labelled the students as armed robbers, which prompted the rage of the mob.

Lucky was said to owe one of the victims some money and they had gone on a debt-recovery mission, when he accused the deceased of trying to rob him.

Ugbaje told journalists Tuesday in Port Harcourt, when the police paraded him and 12 other suspects for their alleged involvement in the crime, that one of the policemen who met them when the mob was beating the students joined them in beating the victims.

He explained that it was after the policeman had partaken in the beating that he requested that the students be handed over to them, a request which the mob refused.

As Ugbaje narrated, "along the line, two policemen came around. One of the policemen was pleading that the boys be left alone, but the other one even joined us in beating the boys. After beating the boys, the policemen now said let the boys be handed over to them. The crowd said no: We no go gree. The policemen now told us that whatever this will result to, they (the crowd) will bear the consequences."

Ugbaje's narrative tallied with the eyewitness account of Miss Ibisobia Elkanah, an elder sister of one of the victims, Tekenah Friday Elkanah. Ibisobia said the police were not repelled by the mob as claimed by them (police), but that one of the policemen suggested that the victims be burnt alive.

"The police van came, went into the mob and they were talking to them (youths). The people kept quiet as the police were making statements. I heard them laughing. You know, they were happy. They kept quiet again. The police talked and they laughed again. The next was for me to see three policemen coming out of the mob, boarded their van. And, one of the said 'burn them alive'. I must confess, I was gripped with fear," she said.

But the police's storyline has been that they were chased back by the murderous mob, forcing them to call for reinforcement from the Joint Task Force (JTF). However, men of the JTF did not come until several hours after the students had been killed and burnt.

The police had earlier announced the arrest of 21 suspects in connection with the crime, including the traditional ruler of the community.

Those paraded included the traditional ruler of Omokiri village, Alhaji Hassan Welewa, Lawal Segun, Lucky Orji, Cynthia Chinwo, Ekpe Daniel, George Nwadei, Gabriel Oche and Ozioma Abajuo.

Others were Chigozie Evans Samuel, Endurance Edet, Uwem Sampson Akpabio, David Chinasa Ugbaje and Ikechukwu Louis Amadi (alias Kapoon).

However, while the police allowed journalists to interview Ugbaje, Amadi and Segun, other suspects, especially Welewa, were shielded from the press.

Briefing journalists, the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Indabawa, said the police arrested two additional suspects, Amadi and Ugbaje, at about 3pm on Monday.

He said the police were forced to parade the suspects because of the enormity of the crime and the interest the crime had generated.

"It is not the philosophy of the Inspector General of Police to parade suspects. Nonetheless, the gruesome manner in which the crime was committed, coupled with the direct and glaring involvement of some of these suspects and the interest generated by the heinous crime left the police with no option than to parade them," he said.

The Inspector General of Police (IG), Mohammed Abubakar, had ordered a full investigation into the crime.

Nigeria: Bloodbath As Tiv, Fulani Clash in Benue

Benue — No fewer than 30 persons were feared dead in a fresh clash between Fulani herdsmen and native Tiv farmers in Yogbo, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. This came as the Joint Task Force, JTF, confirmed, yesterday, that 24 sect members were killed in Monday's spate of explosions and shootings in Maiduguri.

Majority of those killed in the bloodbath that erupted Sunday morning in Yogbo were women and children who could not escape before the herdsmen invaded the embattled community.

The renewed crisis also left several farmlands and yields in ruins while houses and huts worth several millions of Naira were also destroyed by the rampaging Fulani herdsmen.

Vanguard gathered from fleeing residents of the community who had taken refuge in Makurdi town that the arms wielding herdsmen attacked Yogbo, a community that is less than 15 minutes drive from Makurdi town, at about 7am on Sunday when most residents had gone to church.

According to one John Usher who said he escaped with his wife and three children from the sudden attack, "we never envisaged any attack on that day, because we have been living in peace with one another for sometime now.

"We were surprised when the Fulanis suddenly attacked us, slaughtering over 30 women and children who were at home when many families had gone to church; we heard screams of women and children being murdered by the Fulanis who quickly disappeared after carrying out the dastardly attack".

He added: "Given the timing of this latest attack on Tiv farmers, it has become worrisome that anytime a year is coming to an end, these ugly incidents always occur, leading to the spilling of blood and the wanton destruction of property and farm yields of Tiv farmers by the invading Fulani herdsmen. It is just unfortunate".

Meanwhile, at press time, hundreds of indigenous Tiv farmers were seen fleeing to Makurdi town, while some were heading to Gbajimba from the troubled community while security operatives were also seen patrolling parts of the town.

When contacted, the Benue state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Daniel Ezeala confirmed that men of the command have been deployed to the troubled spot to forestall further bloodbath in the area.

Vanguard recalls that attacks on Tiv communities by the herdsmen had, in the last few years, led to deaths of hundreds of persons especially in the border communities between Benue and Nasarawa states.

Efforts by both Benue and Nasarawa state governments and the Sultan of Sokoto to find lasting solution to the crisis have yielded little or no results in the last few months.

Recently, the governors of Benue and Nasarawa states also signed a peace accord at Yelwata, a border town between the two states to end the incessant bloodbath.

24 suspected terrorists, 2 others killed in Maiduguri multiple blasts

Meanwhile, 24 suspected terrorists have been confirmed killed in last Monday's clash with members of the JTF in Gwange, Zannari and Gomari Costain areas of Maiduguri, while two others believed to be members of the JTF were killed by the terrorists.

But the Task Force in Borno State said, yesterday, that no member of JTF or civilian was killed during the encounter, insisting that about 24 suspected Boko Haram fighters were killed in different parts of Maiduguri metropolis.

A statement signed by the JTF spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa and made available to newsmen in Maiduguri, yesterday, said the Boko Haram sect members attacked JTF locations in Zannari ward and Lagos Street along Gwange general area on Monday night where rocket propelled grenades and improvised explosive devices were used by the insurgents.

According to the statement: "The terrorists used civilian homes as launching areas for the attacks at different times of the night of Monday, October 15, 2012. All the attacks were repelled; 24 Boko Haram terrorists were killed".

The JTF spokesman claimed that no civilian casualty was recorded but added that a soldier was wounded during the attack.

He said: "One RPG purpose machine gun, 7 AK 47 riffles, 1 FNC riffle, 24 assorted empty magazines, 950 assorted ammunition, two pistols, large quantity of assorted Improvised Explosives Device (IED) materials and several bows, arrows and cutlasses were recovered from the attackers.

The atmosphere in Maiduguri has been normalized since the early hours of Tuesday(yesterday) as people are going about their normal businesses." Musa warned residents to desist from allowing their homes to be used as launching pads for attacks on troops and civilians, saying such action would be dealt with appropriately.

Mubi massacre: At least 60 students were killed – Female survivor

The brutal killing of some students of Federal Polytechnic a fortnight ago in Mubi, Adamawa State has once again been brought to the fore as a student of the polytechnic gives a detailed account on what transpired. Miss Stella James, a survivor of the October 1 attack had argued that contrary to the total of 40 announced as the casualty figure, over 62 people were said to have lost their lives in the massacre.
Although the official casualty figure from the horror was put at 40, one of the survivors of the attack on students, Miss Serah James, has disputed the claim saying that no fewer than 62 students were killed by the gunmen who invaded the hostel.

James, who said she was afraid to go back to Mubi because she was still being haunted by the horror   of the massacre recalled that prior to the attack, the town was on curfew because soldiers were conducting a house-to-house search for arms.

This she said the students thought they were safe until the mayhem of that Monday.

She said, “Before the attack, the town was under curfew for about 72 hours and we were relaxed that at least with the presence of soldiers we were safe. They were searching for arms and in any house where they discovered such, they would arrest the occupants.
“Then the mayhem started in the early hours of Monday. They went to the hostel where some students were living off campus and started calling the names of the students one by one and shooting them as they were identified. They killed mostly those with Christian names.”

“The whole neighbourhood was jolted and horrified by the boom of gunshots that shattered the silence of the night.”

Speaking further, James said, “On the first day, 40 people were killed and another 22 died the following day either from the gunshots or out of fright.”

According to her, the students’ union election on September 29 was not the reason for the attack as speculated.

Robbers break into Kwara State Ministry of Finance, cart away money, documents, backups

Bukola Saraki

Burglars have made an unprecedented break-in at the Kwara State Ministry of Finance, carting away undisclosed amounts of money as well as all documents, including their electronic backups, which detailed government transactions since 2003.

A top government functionary told SaharaReporters that the burglars first attempted to break into the Accountant General’s office in the Ministry in the early hours of Friday, September 21, but the guards and the burglary-proof doors foiled the attack. The attackers returned on Saturday night armed with different tools grenades and even a power generator with which they broke into the offices where the documents and money were kept, the source said.

The burglary story first surfaced on Twitter, where a whistleblower mentioned it last Tuesday, prompting a terse response from Dr. Muideen Akorede, Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed’s spokesman, who dubbed the incident a “robbery” that is investigation.

Akorede also made tacit confirmation of the foiled first attempt when, in a tweet, he wondered why someone would break into a place and return two days later, and called the document theft an effort to blackmail the government and its officials.

He severally parried questions asked by the whistleblower and others regarding the incident. For instance, he was quiet on why the government has treated the matter like an official secret and why security was not beefed up after the foiled first attack.

More than a week after the incident, neither the state government nor the police have spoken officially on the matter and it is not clear whether any arrest has been made.
Our source observed that having failed in their first attempt, the burglars returned to the same place in the early hours of Saturday September 22, this time armed with sophisticated weapons and equipment including a power-generating machine and grenades with which they blew up the door and other encumbrances.

Furthermore, he said that in the course of forcing their way into the place, the attackers injured and disarmed the two guardsmen, one of whom jumped the fence and ran to the Police Command (that night) to seek help to ward off the invaders. But rather than follow the guardsman to the place, the police reportedly directed him to go and report the incident at Division C at Oja Oba in Ilorin, then to Area A which is in charge of the place, before returning to the State Police Command.

In the end, the sophisticated burglars successfully broke into the safe, took away all the hard currencies and Naira kept there, and, most importantly, made away with all the documents regarding financial transactions since 2003. They also broke into the computer room and retrieved all the electronic backups of all the documents they had stolen.

The incident, according to another source, is fuelling speculations about official cover-up of certain transactions that have been the subject of public scrutiny such as local government joint accounts, contracts and SUBEB funds, with critics drawing a parallel with a similar occurrence at the SGBN a few years ago when the Nuhu Ribadu-led EFCC was probing the insider trading that wrecked the bank.

The burglary, coming amid numerous investigations into the tenure of former Governor Bukola Sarakis in Kwara State, the SUBEB funds, as well as police claims in the N9.2b loan scam that Saraki used shares bought with state funds to stand surety for his private company are lending credence to the speculations of a cover up.

Saraki has denied any wrongdoing in the case, which he labels as political blackmail being sponsored by his traducers.

The police are yet to charge him in the case, but the Police Commissioner heading the Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Mr Tunde Ogunsakin, was reported as saying recently that investigations into the case have reached top gear and that it will soon be charged to court.

A policeman in Ilorin, Kwara State, Salami Adesina, who allegedly conspired with three other people to commit armed robbery has been remanded in prison. An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court on Thursday ordered Mr. Adesina to be remanded in prison along with his three collaborators.

Mr. Adesina, whom the police stationed to Stanbic Bank on Unity Road in Ilorin was issued with a service browning pistol with 10 rounds of live ammunitions for official use.

The policeman decided to use the pistol for criminal activities, the police said. He is alleged to have conspired with three commercial motorcyclists-Raman Musa, Emmanuel Ogbonaya and Abolarin Sunday- to rob his victims of N20 thousand cash and one Nokia cell phone at gun point.

He was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery, which the prosecution said contravened Section 97 of the Penal Code and Section 1(2) of the Armed Robbery and Firearms Act.

According to the charge sheet, the policeman, a corporal serving with Police ‘A’ Division, Ilorin, introduced himself to three people as a police officer. He arrested them without any reason.

The charge sheet stated that Mr. Adesina handcuffed two of his victims with the assistance of the three suspects and took the three victims on motorcycles to a secluded spot around Flower Garden area of the metropolis. The victims were disposed of the money and handset at gun point.

The police prosecutor, Chris Koregee, told the court that investigation into the case was on-ongoing and urged the court to remand the accused in prison. In her ruling, the magistrate, Bola Mohammed, ordered the remand of all the accused in a Federal Prison Yard, Ilorin and adjourned the case to October 24 for further mention.

13-year-old girl murdered in Kogi state, hidden inside freezer

The people of Isanlu Headquarter Yagba Local Government Area of Kogi State were thrown into confusion recently following the gruesome murder of a thirteen year old girl who was deposited into a medium size freezer after been strangulated to death.

The girl identified as Yetunde Rachael Samuel, a JSS 2 student of Oluyori Comprehensive College, Isanlu was killed in the night of October 5 and neatly deposited inside a medium size freezer to create impression that the girl fell into the freezer and was frozen to death without anybody knowing.

She was therefore hurriedly buried in the cover of the night without the parent or the guardian reporting her mysterious death to the police. But the state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Musa Katsina who got wind of the dastardly act, suspected a fowl play, arrested the guardian of the girl and ordered that the corpse be exhume for a thorough autopsy to confirm whether the girl actually jumped inside the freezer and got frozen.

It was a hectic time for Daily Sun and detectives led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Zannah Mohammed who travelled down to the community with pathologist from Federal Medical Centre to exhume the decomposing corpse for autopsy.

The guardian of the girl who was at the centre of the mysterious death, Mrs. Deborah Motunrayo Jaiyeoba claimed that she left the girl who was the daughter of her younger sister at home on Saturday morning and left for a marriage ceremony According to her, when she got back from the wedding ceremony and did not see Yetunde she thought she had gone to play In her words She was thirsty and raced to the deep freezer to get a sachet of water to drink when she suddenly discovered that Yetunde was stone dead and she immediately raised alarm Mrs. Jaiyeoba, a sanitary inspector at the local government claimed Yetunde wanted to clean the deep freezer in her small retail, when she fell into it and got frozen to death Curiously, the father of the deceased girl was said to have felt indifferent about the death of her daughter, as he reportedly consented that she should be buried immediately It was gathered that mother of Yetunde was impregnated while she was in school and decided to drop the girl since when she was two years old with her sister to go and remarry in Ilorin

However, the autopsy carried out revealed that the girl was actually killed for ritual purposes Preliminary doctor’s report confirmed that the girl died as result of neorogenic shock secondary to multiple skeletal injuries most likely sustained by blunt force trauma The doctor’s report said two of the girl’s teeth were removed. With some vital parts while the entire head region was battered with blunt instrument Speaking with Daily Sun, the CP said the whole episode was a case of culpable homicide, which is not bailable

He said the innocent girl was only brutally murdered, but expressed shock that the biological father of the girl did not show concern, instead, he brought a letter to his office along with somebody who claimed to be a judicial officer that the case be withdrawn.

He said when he interrogated the father; he could not even read nor comprehend the contents of the letter, which gave suspicion that some people were behind the murder. Musa Katsina called on members of the public to be more vigilante on their children and to know who to give their children to for upkeep. He vowed to pursue the case to a logical conclusion with those found guilty made to face the wrath of the law He gave the names of those arrested as 43-year-old Mrs. Jaiyeoba Deborah Motunrayo, who is the guardian and three of her children namely, Jaiyeoba Titilayo 20-year-old and Tunmininu jaiyeoba 23-year-old with jaiyeoba Femi, 18 years old Others are Shade Jimoh, Chief J. Nigeria & United Kingdom to Swap Prison Inmates

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have reached an understanding to begin a prison swap programme. This would be launched as soon as Nigeria signs its Prison Act into law.

The Chairman Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Dahiru Tambuwal said this on Monday at the flag-off of 2012 prison audit by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kuje Prison.

The Senator said funds for the programme, which the United Kingdom is willing to provide, would be used to renovate prisons so as to make the facilities habitable enough and kept at least to meet minimum world standard to accommodate inmates. The United Kingdom, he added, has promised to provide money to fund the process of prison inmates’ exchange.

Senator Tambuwal said that the Bill seeking the amendment of the Prison Act has gone through the second reading and would be finally passed by the senate in two weeks, after which the Prison swap process can begin.

“The process to evolve a new prison law has gone beyond the second reading as we are now looking at it clause-by-clause,” Daily Times quoted him as saying. “It is expected that in about two weeks, the process would have been completed and the amendment effected.”

The Senator did not give details of the Prison swap programme in the news report. This is what I am even more curious about. Are they bringing British prisoners serving time to Nigerian Prisons and taking Nigerian prisoners abroad? Or would it be a situation where Nigerian prisoners serving time in the UK would be brought to the renovated prisons here in Nigeria in order to decongest their own prisons? What is the whole essence of the Prison Swap programme? What benefits does it hold for the Nigerian and UK government?

Any thoughts?

Murder of 4 UNIPORT students: An exclusive story behind their death

The brutal murder of the Four students of the University of Port Harcourt has become a major source of worry to many Nigerians who feel that human lives have no value as far as the country is concerned.

Since the incident, many people have advocated for the immediate arrest of those behind the heinous act and possibly charge them if found guilty. While some have continued to advocate for death sentence, others advocate for life imprisonment.

However, Daily Post investigation reveals that none of the four murdered students was involved in robbery or any kind of pilfering. Our correspondent spoke with an anonymous colleague of the late Llyod and Ugo whom he said were aspiring musicians and his colleagues.

It was gathered from the source that Ugo and Lloyd were cousins. Someone was indebted to Ugo around the community and had vowed not to pay. Ugo who was popularly known as Tipsy had gone to meet with a fearless University guy (name-withheld) to help them track the debtor who had been on the run. The guy who was feared by many in the school had accepted to accompany his friends to get the debtor tracked down and get his own percentage of the money. They were joined by their room mate, Chidiaka. On their way to the place, they met one of their friends, Tekena, who knew nothing about the plan, and he joined, just for the hype as it’s normal with young boys of juvenile age.

They were actually 5 that got to the debtor’s compound. Unknown to the other four, the “Confra” guy who was contracted to intimidate the debtor just to get the money paid went with a gun .When they got to the guy’s house around 12am, fight ensued, as the debtor confronted them. A next door neighbour, a woman started shouting on top of her voice, that they were thieves, attracting other bad boys around the areas, whom they said were mainly “vickins”, rival cult group of the one on contract. They swung into action by tipping the vigilantee who confronted the boys, referring to them as thieves. At the process of beating the boys, and while they were trying to explain, the fifth ‘guy’,the cultist brought out his gun to scare the people, and he escaped, leaving the rest four at the mercy of the villagers.

The explanation they tried to give fell on the community’s deaf ears as the people insisted that they must be killed. Another close friend of Ugo and Lloyd had reacted by calling on the president to take action against those behind the murder of the four students. The young man who had pleaded that his identity be kept secret said: “Mr President those 4 boys who were killed at Aluu near Uniport were my young friends. I was their mentor. Two of them were promising rappers and singers. I am forwarding their work ironically titled “ain’t no love in the
city” http://hitplayonline.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/17-heart-of-the-city-ft-yetty-big-l-and-tipsy.mp3″.

This story got to dailypost as an eyewitness account from the 5th boy who escaped. He narrated this to Ugo and Lloyd’s friend who has pleaded that his identity be kept secret.
