Florence Ajimobi: “We have no knowledge of her arrest” – London Met Police

The London Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) yesterday said they have no knowledge of the purported arrest of the wife of Oyo State Governor, Mrs Florence Ajimobi.

A Nigerian news media, PM News, yesterday published a story with a screaming headline“Anxiety over Florence Ajimobi Alleged Arrest in UK”, adding that “London Met Police has not issued any statement about her alleged arrest, affirming that her name drew blank in a search of the Met Police website by P.M.NEWS.”

The story was reportedly first peddled by an online news media, “NewsLeak”.

But the UK Police authorities as at 9:30pm (Nigerian time) yesterday refuted reports of Mrs Ajimobi’s arrest in London.

An officer who spoke with DailyPost said, “We have no knowledge of her being arrested, the lady in question might be with another Police Force but definitely not with the Metropolitan Police.” He then advised us to speak with Nigeria embassy officials.

However, several calls put across to the Nigerian embassy went unanswered.

Meanwhile, Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has slammed a N1 billion suit on Independent Communications Network Limited, publishers of PM News.

This was contained in a release issued yesterday in Ibadan by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Festus Adedayo.

The statement accused the opposition of deliberately seeking to cause anxiety in the land under the guise of playing politics.

It reads in part: “We want to state unequivocally that this report is not only wicked, it is the figment of the imagination of the writers. Mrs. Ajimobi was never arrested for any offence whatsoever. Even though our investigations have shown that this is the work of some arrowheads of the opposition, it was done in such an amateurish way that beats the imagination of any responsible reader.”

While noting that it respects the freedom of the press and its huge contributions to democracy, the state government said it would not take the matter lightly and as such has decided to approach the court to determine the veracity or otherwise of the allegation.

Floods: President Jonathan under pressure to declare state of emergency

President Goodluck Jonathan has come under pressure from interest groups to declare a state of emergency in the areas ravaged by flood, Vanguard learnt yesterday.

The pressure, according to informed sources, is coming from Nigerian-based international development agencies, which strongly believe that Nigeria does not have the capacity to cope with the devastation being caused by floods nationwide.

Vanguard investigations revealed that the agencies had already met in Abuja and have written a strongly worded letter to the Presidency advising that Nigeria should immediately declare a state of emergency following the unprecedented level of flooding that has hit the country this year.

They contended that it was only through the declaration of the state of emergency that the United Nations and other international aid agencies could see reason to come to the aid of Nigeria in containing the havoc wreaked by the floods.

The development agencies are said to have pointed to the fact that current flooding in Nigeria was the worst in recent history, having displaced over 1.3 million persons from 30 states in the country and caused untold hardship to the victims, most of them peasant farmers.

The agencies further drew the attention of the Nigerian government to the statistics from Nigerian Meteorological Management Agency that increased flooding in the month of October would add additional 431 deaths to the casualty figure and lead to the displacement of 1,341,179 and injury to 29,689 persons while 610,806 houses would be destroyed and thousands of farmlands affected in 2,389 communities in 231 local government areas in the country.

One of the letters, which Vanguard sighted last night said: “In order for the United Nations and other agencies, including development partners and donors, to respond to this crisis, the procedure is that the Nigerian government needs to declare a state of emergency, and according to reliable sources, the government has been informed that this is what is required to draw international attention.

“The government has not declared the state of emergency for reasons best known to it and has also not been able to fully meet the needs of the affected persons. Reports coming from the field also suggest that Nigeria may be under threat of food crisis in 2013. Therefore, the international support required is both for the short and the long term.

“There   is the need for Nigerians to demand that the government declares a state of emergency for the reasons above. Ideally, the government and the UN should lead in coordinating a rapid and effective relief operation.

“While we commend the government for the funds it has so far released and the efforts of NEMA in providing a rapid response, it is pertinent that the UN and other agencies step in to support the efforts of government as government does not have the full capacity to respond effectively to the demands of this emergency.”

Nigerian sex trafficker used 'juju' to terrorise young orphans he raped after smuggling them into UK

A Nigerian smuggler who used witchcraft rituals to force children to work as sex slaves was jailed for 20 years on October 28th

Osezua Osolase, 42, tricked poverty-stricken Nigerian orphans into travelling to the UK with the promise of a better life. But the young victims were raped, sexually abused and subjected to voodoo-style rituals by a child trafficking ring.

Osolase, the linchpin of a multi-million pound global sex trafficking ring, used 'juju' magic to control his victims. He told the teenage girls they would die or never bear children if they tried to escape or revealed what had happened to them.

Caught on film: Osezua Osolase (in baseball cap) with young trafficking victims under surveillance at Stansted Airport. The children's faces have been obscured in order to protect their identities

Judge Adele Williams told Osolase: 'You are arrogant and manipulative, you are devoid of conscience, devoid of any compassion to your victims.

'You were dealing in exploitation and misery and degradation. You have been convicted on clear and compelling evidence of trafficking two girls in and out of the UK.
'Once they arrived in the UK the reality was explained to them that they were going to have to work as prostitutes.

'They were petrified that if they spoke out they would be harmed and killed.'

During the trial it emerged that Osolase raped one of the young girls knowing he had HIV. Judge Williams described this as a 'seriously aggravating' feature to his crimes.

At Canterbury Crown Court on Friday, Osolase was convicted of five counts of trafficking for sexual exploitation, one of rape and one of sexual activity with a child.

The charges relate to three girls aged 14, 16, and 17. One was raped and all three endured juju rituals, including one conducted by Osolase himself.

One feared she was being taken to another country to be used as a human sacrifice. Osolase slashed the chest of his youngest victim with a razor and rubbed black powder into her bleeding wounds.

On the surface, Osolase was a recycling worker living in a terraced house in Gravesend, Kent. But his home was a secret staging post for vulnerable teenage orphans as they were smuggled from Africa, via Britain, to several European countries.

Detectives discovered evidence that at least 28 victims were smuggled in and out of Britain over a 14-month period, earning him up to £1.5million.
